The Challenger disaster I feel started the disillusionment America had for it's space program which became permanent after the 2003 Columbia disaster. It became clear that in the eyes of the non-space geek, NASA can't be trusted any longer.

Probably the case. Software outages are something else like Github today or the mightiest of all panic software outages in FB (God they treat as if it is like you said).

When an outage happens, people do panic a lot.
